University of Oldenburg trains teachers for Low German

It is unique in Lower Saxony: the new degree course in Low German, which the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg has been offering since this winter semester. The course is aimed at future teachers who want to teach Low German at secondary schools. "If Low German is established as a subject at secondary schools, it can increase the chances of the language remaining alive," says Doreen Brandt, Junior Professor of Low German Literature from a Historical and Cultural Studies Perspective at the University of Oldenburg.

Nine students have enrolled, the university has capacity for 20 students, said Brandt. And: Low German language skills are not a prerequisite for the course, they can be acquired in courses. The next enrollment is possible for the winter semester 2024/25.

This course at the University of Oldenburg also includes the study of various scientific aspects of Low German. The integration of Low German into university education can inspire more universities across Europe to offer similar programs in their respective languages.
