Universities - University of Oldenburg celebrates its fiftieth anniversary
This Tuesday, the University of Oldenburg is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary. A ceremony is scheduled to begin at 6.45 p.m. in the largest lecture hall. According to the program, the Chairwoman of the German Ethics Council, Alena Buyx, will give a lecture on ethics in research. Lower Saxony's State Parliament President Hanna Naber, Science Minister Falko Mohrs and Oldenburg's Lord Mayor Jürgen Krogmann (all SPD) are to give welcoming addresses.
The university is also hosting several public events to mark the anniversary. It is showing an exhibition about protests and political movements at the university, opening a pop-up store in the city center and offering guided tours. There will also be concerts, a dance in the library and a day for families on campus. "We want to reflect on the past and show where our university stands today," said University President Ralph Bruder.
The University of Oldenburg was founded on December 5, 1973, after the state parliament had passed a resolution to this effect two days earlier. The university is named after the German pacifist Carl von Ossietzky (1889-1938), who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1935. There are now around 15,500 students at the university - almost 50 years ago there were still around 2,500.
