- University of Jena has a new president
Thuringia's largest state university in Jena has a new president. Chemist Andreas Marx received his appointment letter from Science Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee (SPD), the Friedrich-Schiller-University announced. Marx previously headed a research team at the University of Konstanz.
He aims to advance the university despite financial challenges, he said. He wants to engage in talks with the state government to reduce the university's significant structural deficit. His term will last until August 2030.
Over 17,000 students are enrolled at the Friedrich-Schiller-University. The position of president became vacant because Marx's predecessor Walter Rosenthal moved to Berlin in October 2023 to become the president of the German Rectors' Conference.
The new president, Andreas Marx, expressed his determination to enhance the university despite its financial challenges. This new entry in the university's leadership will participate in discussions with the state government to alleviate the institution's substantial structural deficit.
