University investigates possible anti-Semitic background after action
Freie Universität (FU) Berlin is investigating a criminal background after an action - possibly in the form of discrimination and anti-Semitism. A spontaneous, unregistered "flash mob" took place in a canteen on Monday, which the university management only found out about later, the FU press office announced on Wednesday. The university is examining whether the case is relevant under criminal law and whether criminal charges will be filed.
"If this action is relevant under criminal law, in particular if it is a case of discrimination and anti-Semitism, this contradicts the fundamental stance of Freie Universität Berlin," the university stated. The FU management does not know whether students or employees took part.
The newspaper "B.Z." wrote on Tuesday evening that people had dressed up as "corpses" with white scarves and used flyers to accuse Israel of using apartheid methods against Palestinians.
Dozens of people - including students - had gathered in front of the FU on November 3 for a pro-Palestinian rally. Participants waved Palestinian flags. The police counted around 160 participants. A call for the rally on the internet spoke of genocide in connection with the war in the Gaza Strip, among other things.
Universities across Germany have been addressing conflicts related to anti-Semitism on their campuses, and Freie Universität Berlin's investigation into a potential anti-Semitic incident underscores this concern. The university is currently investigating a spontaneous action that took place in a canteen, resulting in conflicting sentiments due to its possible association with discrimination and anti-Semitism.
