United Nations investigators allege Israel and Palestinian factions of committing war-related offenses.
The Israeli representative to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Meirav Shadar, lambasted the commission for its apparent anti-Israeli bias. In her view, the council's actions were designed to unfairly target Israel.
The head of the commission, ex-UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay, argued that ensuring accountability for criminal conduct was crucial. According to her, the only way to put an end to the cycle of violence stemming from aggression and retaliation between both sides was to uphold international law.
In May 2021, the United Nations established a special commission to probe any violations relating to human rights and humanitarian law in Israel and the Palestinian territories. Presently, the investigators are examining the conflict that started on October 7 when Palestinian militants, spearheaded by Hamas and other groups, launched a massive attack on Israel. This was followed by a massive military response from the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip.
