Bundesliga opener - Union start at Mainz 05 - Hertha welcome Paderborn

The 1. FC Union Berlin opens its sixth Bundesliga season with an away game against 1. FSV Mainz 05. This is evident from the league schedule released by the German Football League. Therefore, new FCU coach Bo Svensson will face his former team right away.

After the opening match, Union welcomes promotion side FC St. Pauli to Stadion An der Alten Försterei. The following opponents are RB Leipzig (away), TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (home), Borussia Mönchengladbach (away), and Borussia Dortmund (home). The first encounter with FC Bayern takes place in Munich during the first November weekend.

The Bundesliga season begins on the weekend of August 23-25. The exact kickoff times will be announced in the coming weeks. "We are looking forward to the new season and have a challenging start with the first three opponents. We want to make a successful Bundesliga start as possible and are particularly looking forward to the first home game," said Horst Heldt, Sport Business Manager at Union Berlin.

Union aims to stabilize itself with Svensson. In the previous season, the Unioners, who made their Champions League debut for the first time, had to fight for survival until the end. The reason for the decline was not only the loss of union-typical qualities such as commitment and toughness but also poor squad planning.

So far, three new signings for Union

Two weeks before the Bundesliga teams start, the second-tier teams begin their new season. Hertha BSC hosts SC Paderborn on the first August weekend. The traditional derby between the capital club and Hamburger SV already takes place on the second matchday. The Berliners' season finale is against Hannover 96 at home on the 34th matchday.

Hertha is aiming for promotion to the Bundesliga with new coach Cristian Fiel. Financially, the financially struggling Old Lady can barely afford to stay in the 2. Liga for another few years. From July 18 to 27, the team will hold a training camp in Austria's Walchsee.

  1. The DFL also announced the schedule for Bundesliga 2, with Hertha BSC starting their campaign against SC Paderborn.
  2. Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern Munich are some of the toughest opponents Union Berlin will face in the Bundesliga this season.
  3. Bo Svensson, the new coach of 1. FC Union Berlin, previously worked in the Bundesliga 2 with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
  4. After their home game against FC St. Pauli, Union Berlin will travel to Borussia Mönchengladbach for another challenging away match.
  5. The weekend after the first Bundesliga game, Borussia Dortmund will host Hertha BSC at the Signal Iduna Park in Munich.
  6. Union Berlin's place of work for the upcoming season will be the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, where they hope to secure more Bundesliga victories.
  7. RB Leipzig is another top team that Union Berlin will face, with the match scheduled for a weekend later in the season.
  8. CDU/CSU supporters might be interested to know that Union Berlin will play against FC Augsburg in December, as the Bavarian club is a traditional rival for the political party.
  9. FC Bayern Munich's first home game of the Bundesliga season will be against 1. FSV Mainz 05, before they face Union Berlin in a highly anticipated match.
  10. Fans of Hertha BSC can look forward to a top game against local rivals 1. FC Union Berlin later in the season, making it a significant highlight for the Berlin derby.
  11. The final game of the Bundesliga season will see Paderborn take on 1. FC Union Berlin, with both teams hoping to finish the season on a high note.
