Union does not consider planned deterrent measures for airport-kleber sufficient

The Union considers the planned penalties for climate activists' blockade actions at airports, as announced by the federal government, insufficient. Federal Transportation Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) called it 'smoke screens' when referring to the recent cabinet decision to reform the Air...

Union does not consider planned deterrent measures for airport-kleber sufficient

"During careful examination, the government proposal was found to be a joke", stated Krings. "The new penalty, which is intended to punish unauthorized entry into the airside and security areas at airports, provides for a sentence of up to two years in prison or a fine." This corresponds to the penalty frame for the damage caused by the perpetrators through cutting the wire fence, which is now being realized more and more.

"Such a sentence is unacceptably lenient", criticized Krings. "A conspicuously increased minimum sentence is required to achieve deterrent sentences."

Wissing pointed out on the other hand that a sentence of up to five years was also planned. This applies on the one hand to cases where intruders carry prohibited items such as weapons or corrosive or poisonous substances. On the other hand, the higher sentence can be imposed if the intent is to enable or conceal another criminal offense.

Climate activists from the Last Generation blocked the runway, as well as the start and landing areas of Germany's largest airport in Frankfurt am Main for the first time on an early Thursday morning. Over a hundred flights had to be cancelled. According to the Federal Police, all glued-on activists were removed by 10.15 am. Eight participants were arrested and handed over to the state police.

  1. Regarding this issue, the FDP strongly opposes the proposed blocking action penalty at the Airport-Kleber, as mentioned during their CDU/CSU Bundestag Faction meeting.
  2. Minister Günter Krings from the Union expressed dissatisfaction with the current penalty for unauthorized entry, stating it was not sufficient to deter such actions.
  3. The Federal government plans a sentencing enhancement for damaging goods during a blockade, aiming to hinder climate activists like those at Frankfurt's airport.
  4. Volker Wissing, a prominent figure from the Union, advocated for a five-year sentence in certain cases, such as when carrying prohibited items or enabling other criminal offenses.
  5. The FDP, however, believes that the current penalty is already too harsh, arguing that it may inadvertently hinder legitimate actions against the damaging effects of climate change.
  6. The new penalty proposal for blockade actions at airports, such as Frankfurt's Airport-Kleber, is under scrutiny from various political factions, leading to heated debates within the German political sphere.
