Union coach on playing philosophy: No 50 touches of the ball
Union Berlin's new coach Nenad Bjelica pursues a clear footballing approach. "My teams play very intensely with a lot of pressing, with a lot of intensity. My teams are very unpleasant opponents for their opponents. We want to dominate," said the 52-year-old Croatian at his presentation on Sunday.
Bjelica gained experience as a coach in the top divisions in Austria, Poland, Croatia and Turkey. He played in the Champions League with Austria Vienna and Dinamo Zagreb. "I'm not a coach who needs 50 touches of the ball to finish. I'm more someone who wants to find the shortest route to goal," said Köpenick's new hopeful about his playing philosophy.
After 15 games without a win, Bjelica will first have to build up the team. Starting work in the middle of a relegation battle is not a problem for the Croatian. "My first two jobs in my career were also relegation battles. I am fully convinced of my work. I am very self-confident," said the experienced coach about his character and promised "maximum commitment".
Bjelica's coaching style is evident in his love for intense pressing and dominance, as shown in his previous stints in Austria, Poland, Croatia, and Turkey. Under his leadership, 1st FC Union Berlin aims to be an uncomfortable opponent for their Bundesliga rivals, deviating from the traditional 50 touches of the ball approach.
