Unicef: Dramatic situation for children in Ukraine
The UN Children's Fund has called for increased aid in view of the dramatic situation of children and young people in Ukraine. "There is no child in the whole of Ukraine who has been spared by this war," said Christian Schneider, Managing Director of Unicef Germany, to the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger newspaper (Saturday edition). The suffering population in Ukraine must not be forgotten, even if all eyes are currently on the crisis region in the Middle East, he warned.
Children and young people are also suffering mentally from the consequences of the Russian war of aggression - with anxiety, depression and even suicidal thoughts. "With all due caution, we estimate the number of minors in need of treatment at 1.5 million," said Schneider. The damage to the educational infrastructure is enormous, many schools have been destroyed. Mothers with several children in particular - an increasing number of them war widows - are in urgent need of help.
Despite the ongoing focus on the Middle East crisis, it's crucial that aid organizations like Unicef provide increased support to address the conflicts and resulting mental health issues affecting over 1.5 million children in Ukraine, many of whom are war orphans. The devastation of educational infrastructure due to the war further underlines the need for immediate assistance.
