- Unfortunate apple crop in Saxony: postponement of the season commencement
Due to some extreme frost damage and projected significant crop decreases, there won't be a traditional apple season launch in Saxony this year. "Now, we're working on devising strategies with the appropriate government departments and offices to ensure the continuity of our fruit farms," stated the Fruit Growers' Association of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. The association has already entered negotiations with the political sphere.
The association acknowledges a "never-before-seen predicament" and estimates a production of roughly 10% compared to last year's figures. In 2021, Saxony harvested 56,650 apples. This year, however, predictions suggest a paltry 5,800 tons. Given these trying circumstances, the association encourages consumers to prioritize locally sourced goods and offer their support to local producers whenever feasible.
The association regrettably announces that the opening season for apples will be postponed due to the current situation. With the hope of resuming normal operations, they are focusing on preparing for an abbreviated opening season.
