Labor market - Unemployment stagnates, but more long-term unemployed
The unemployment rate in Saxony-Anhalt has stagnated at 7.3 percent. As the regional directorate of the employment agency announced on Thursday, around 80,300 people were registered as unemployed in November. Compared to November last year, the unemployment rate rose from 7.1 to 7.3 percent. In a state comparison, it was thus below that of Bremen, Berlin, Hamburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Nationwide, the rate rose by 0.3 points to 5.6 percent.
It is noticeable that there are slightly more long-term unemployed than a year ago, said Regional Directorate Head Markus Behrens. In addition, fewer new jobs were reported for the third month in a row. This development was particularly strong in the manufacturing industry, the hospitality industry, business management and temporary work.
Companies were hesitant to hire new staff, said Behrens. "We do not expect a slump in the labor market in the coming months, although unemployment will rise at the end of the year and the beginning of the new year due to seasonal factors."
According to the regional directorate, 5,000 unemployed people of Ukrainian origin were also registered in Saxony-Anhalt in November. That was around 100 fewer than in October.
The highest unemployment rate was in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz at 9.6 percent and the lowest in the Börde district at 4.9 percent.
