Unemployment rises slightly in MV

The slightly positive trend on the labor market in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern did not continue. The hiring of seasonal workers in the tourism industry did not offset job losses.

- Unemployment rises slightly in MV

The number of unemployed people in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has risen again. According to the regional directorate of the Federal Employment Agency in Kiel, there were 63,000 people without jobs in the northeast in July. This was 1,100 more than in June and 2,700 more than in July 2023. This reversed the positive trend seen in June. However, the increase compared to the previous month was 1.8 percent, which was lower than in other federal states.

Transition Phase: End of Training

The hiring of seasonal workers at the start of the vacation season in June had invigorated the labor market in MV. Now, particularly the end of vocational training has led to more people being unemployed again. Youth unemployment among 15- to 25-year-olds increased disproportionately by almost 8 percent within a month. Nearly 6,800 young people were registered as unemployed in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

"By far the largest part of them will not be unemployed anymore in the fall, as this is a typical transition phenomenon," explained regional director Markus Biercher. "This applies especially to the freshly trained skilled workers who could not be taken on by their training companies for various reasons."

Appeal to Companies

He appealed to companies to enable young people to start their careers quickly and thus counteract a possible exodus of urgently needed skilled workers. He reported that there were 16,500 open socially insured positions in MV, which was the same as in June.

The unemployment rate in MV reached 7.7 percent. In June, it was 7.5 percent, and in July 2023, it was 7.4 percent. The highest rate was again recorded in the city of Schwerin with 10.2 percent, and the lowest was in the district of Rostock with 5.9 percent, which remained below the federal average. Nationwide, the unemployment rate is currently 6.0 percent, which is 0.2 percentage points higher than in June. The employment agency based its calculations on data up to July 15.

Economic Development Continues to Deteriorate

According to Economics Minister Reinhard Meyer, the deteriorating economic situation in Germany is also noticeable in MV. "Many companies are currently putting on the brakes when it comes to new hires," he said. He also referred to the "usual effect in the summer," where young people are temporarily registered as unemployed after completing their training.

Immediately before the start of the new training year, 2,100 school leavers in the country had not yet been placed. The number of unfilled training positions was almost double, at 3,500. "This means that young people not only have good mathematical chances of starting their vocational training this fall. The selection of attractive training professions and interesting training companies extends across all branches and areas of the country," said Biercher. There are many offers in retail, logistics, hotels and restaurants, but also in crafts.

The heavy workload during the vacation season had initially decreased unemployment, but the end of training resulted in a heavy increase in youth unemployment. Many of the freshly trained skilled workers, despite their qualifications, were finding it heavy to find permanent positions in their training companies.
