Bundesliga - Undav delighted with goal against Werder - home European Championship as goal
Striker Deniz Undav had announced it: a match against his boyhood club Werder Bremen gives him extra motivation. And the 27-year-old promptly scored the Swabians' opening goal in VfB Stuttgart's 2:0 (1:0) win in the Bundesliga on Saturday evening. "I'm happy about every goal. But Werder is the club I was knocked out by back then, so to be able to stand here and score a goal against Werder - of course it feels a bit better than usual," said Undav, reiterating that he bears no grudge against Werder.
After being sorted out as a youth player in Bremen, he made the leap to professional football in a roundabout way. Undav scored his eighth goal against Werder in his tenth Bundesliga appearance. He has been such a focus of attention at VfB for weeks that he is even being talked about as a future international striker and candidate for next summer's European Championship at home.
"That's my goal. Let's see what happens," Undav said again about a possible participation in the European Championship. The striker would not only be eligible to play for Germany, but also for Turkey.
