Decathlon Champion Leo Neugebauer clinched an unexpected victory at the Berlin ISTAF triathlon. The German decathlon record holder emerged victorious in the standard athletics event following a 100-meter dash, discus toss, and 1500-meter run, surpassing Manuel Eitel from Ulm, with Niklas Kaul, former world and European champion, finishing fourth.
Neugebauer clocked 10.77 seconds over the 100-meter dash, with Eitel leading in 10.51 seconds, despite his withdrawal from the Olympics due to a COVID-19 infection. Kaul completed the race in 11.46 seconds. Neugebauer excelled in the discus with a throw of 53.13 meters, securing the top spot.
Neugebauer went on the offensive on the 1500 meters
Before the final 1500-meter race, the points disparities were converted into time differences, and the event was transformed into a chase. Neugebauer led the pack, with Eitel pursuing him. The 24-year-old acknowledged that the final decathlon discipline wasn't one of his specialties.
Neugebauer generated a 24-second gap between him and Eitel, securing the win comfortably. He even set a new personal best of 4:38.10 minutes. Eitel overtook Andrin Huber from Switzerland in the final sprint. Kaul, known for his prowess in the 1500-meter run, finished fourth.
