District of Görlitz - Unauthorized pyrotechnics at home: man seriously injured

A 27-year-old man has been seriously injured in an explosion of explosives in an apartment in the district of Görlitz. On Sunday, the man had been experimenting with unauthorized pyrotechnics, the police announced on Monday. According to the spokesperson, the pyrotechnics presumably ignited themselves. The injured man was taken to hospital by rescue helicopter. His partner and daughter, who were also in the apartment at the time of the explosion, were unharmed.

The residents of the apartment building in the municipality of Großschönau had to leave the house for five hours. Meanwhile, a structural engineer checked the safety of the house. The affected apartment was badly devastated and around 25,000 euros worth of damage was caused. The other apartments remained undamaged. An investigation is now underway into the causing of an explosive detonation. However, there are no indications that the man caused the explosion deliberately, according to the police.
