UN Security Council ends mission in Sudan
The British UN representative James Kariuki regretted the end of the mission. "The need for the UN and the international community to support the people of Sudan has not diminished," he said.
In mid-November, the Sudanese leadership officially called for an end to the UN mission, which also documents human rights violations in Sudan. In June, Khartoum had already declared the then head of Unitam, Volker Perthes, an undesirable person. The German political scientist then resigned from his post in September.
Since mid-April, the troops of military ruler Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the RSF militia of his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo have been engaged in a bloody power struggle in the North African crisis state. According to estimates, more than 10,000 people have been killed and, according to the UN, more than six million people are on the run.
The UN mission Unitams (United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Sudan) was founded in June 2020 to support a democratic transition after the fall of ruler Omar al-Bashir in 2019. In October 2021, however, General al-Burhan deposed the transitional government made up of civilians and military personnel in a coup.
