UN-Report: Around nine percent of people worldwide are affected by hunger

Between 713 and 757 million people were affected by hunger last year, as stated in the report from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the World Health Organization (WHO).

However, hunger is unevenly distributed around the world: In Africa, 20% of the population was affected, compared to an average of 11% in the rest of the world. The situation improved slightly in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Approximately 2.33 billion people were affected by moderate or severe food insecurity, which forced them to occasionally skip meals - nearly 29% of the world population.

The United Nations goal of ending hunger and undernourishment worldwide by 2030 is moving further away, according to the report. Estimates suggest that up to 3.975 trillion Dollars (around 3.67 Billion Euros) in financing for food security and nutrition are necessary. The UN report proposes a large-scale reform for the financing of food security. Donors, international organizations, NGOs, and foundations must coordinate better, it was stated.

Co-author David Laborde lamented that a "Marshall Plan" had not been established to stockpile the funds allocated for hunger eradication.

Criticism came from the aid organization Action Against Hunger. It was "unacceptable" that in the 21st century, so many people were still going hungry, declared CEO Helene Mutschler. "We have the means and the responsibility to end hunger worldwide for good," she emphasized.
