Ulrike Lorenz remains President of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar
Ulrike Lorenz will remain President of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar until the end of 2027. At its most recent meeting, the Board of Trustees confirmed the extension of the contract for the 60-year-old art historian, as the foundation announced on Wednesday. This will ensure stable management of the foundation during the state and federal election years of 2024 and 2025 and a responsible search process for the upcoming generational change in the foundation's management in 2028. Lorenz has headed Germany's second-largest cultural foundation since August 2019.
The Klassik Stiftung Weimar includes 27 museums, palaces, parks and historic houses, including those of the poets Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller. 12 properties are Unesco World Heritage Sites, including the Goethe Residence on Frauenplan with the house garden and adjoining historic buildings.
From spring 2026, the Goethe Residence is to be renovated in line with its listed status for around 45 million euros and the exhibition redesigned, with 35 million euros coming from the federal and state governments in equal shares. Citing the budget committee, the foundation recently announced that the federal government would support the project with 17.15 million euros. Goethe moved into the house on the Frauenplan in 1782, where he lived until his death. According to the foundation, the Goethe National Museum is visited by around 100,000 people every year.
Lorenz plans to conclude her work as president of the foundation in 2027 with a "Frauenplan" theme year on the epoch-making achievements of women in Weimar's culture.
During her tenure as President, Ulrike Lorenz has overseen the management of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, which houses numerous personal details of historical figures like Goethe and Schiller in its various literature-filled libraries and art-rich galleries, all situated in foundational structures. As part of her final year, Lorenz intends to dedicate a theme year to the significant contributions of women in Weimar's literary and artistic circles, focusing on the Female Plan.
