Ulm gives up the lead: 2-2 against Kaiserlautern

After over 23 years, SSV scores a goal in the 2nd soccer Bundesliga, but it's not enough as FCK turns the game late.

- Ulm gives up the lead: 2-2 against Kaiserlautern

Despite briefly leading against 1. FC Kaiserslautern, newly-promoted SSV Ulm returned to the 2. Bundesliga after a 23-year absence with a 1-2 defeat. The hard-fought duel against the Red Devils, where coach Markus Anfang stood on the sideline for the first time, ended 1-2 (0-0). Felix Higl put SSV ahead in front of 17,400 spectators at the Donaustadion (49.), before Boris Tomiak equalized from the penalty spot (77.) and Aaron Opoku sealed the victory (83.).

The visitors dominated the early minutes but failed to capitalize on their advantages for a long time. Ulm's goalkeeper Christian Ortag saved against Marlon Ritter after half an hour. However, SSV also worked their way into the game after a passive start.

Lucky Ulm lead

After the break, FCK made the first claims: Opoku missed a counter-attack chance (47.). Almost immediately, Higl presented himself alone in front of Lautern's goalkeeper Julian Krahl and scored the somewhat lucky lead for SSV.

But FCK still had enough time left. They needed the help of the video assistant first. Only after his intervention, referee Robert Schröder awarded a penalty, which Tomiak converted confidently. Just six minutes later, Opoku scored and made coach Anfang's successful debut perfect.

Despite the visitors control in the early minutes, SSV Ulm's goalkeeper, Christian Ortag, managed to save a shot from Marlon Ritter (30'), allowing Ulm to regain momentum. In the second half, SSV Ulm's Felix Higl scored a somewhat fortunate goal to take a lead against FCK (49').
