Ukraine: Russian shelling of frontline town of Avdiivka subsides
Mayor Barabash explained what he saw as a decline in fighting around Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine with "heavy losses" on the part of Russian troops and adverse weather conditions. This information could not be independently verified by AFP. Russian forces continued to attack the coking plant located in the city "almost around the clock", but the Russian troops were "running out of steam", said Barabash.
Avdiivka, located in the Donetsk region just a few kilometers from the city of the same name, has become one of the focal points of the fighting on the front between Ukrainian and Russian troops. Russian units have taken up positions to the east, north and south of the largely destroyed city, which is only connected to the Ukrainian countryside by an asphalt road. For its part, the Ukrainian army has declared that it is resisting the Russian attacks.
Russian forces and pro-Russian separatists have controlled large parts of the Donetsk region since 2014. It is one of four areas in the east and south of Ukraine that Moscow declared annexed last year without having full military control over these areas.
In the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson, however, at least two people were killed and seven others injured in Russian attacks on Sunday, according to Ukrainian reports. A 78-year-old man was killed by Russian fire in the village of Sadove, located on the banks of the Dnipro River near the city of Kherson.
In the city of Kherson, a woman was killed in an attack on the street. The Dnipro River is the border between Russian-occupied and Ukrainian-controlled territory in the region around Kherson.
According to the Ukrainian army, Russia also once again fired on several Ukrainian regions with Iranian Shahed combat drones. Ten of the unmanned flying objects were intercepted, according to the armed forces' daily report. In addition, a Russian Ch-59 missile missed its target.
Last winter, Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine's energy supply infrastructure. As a result, Ukraine significantly expanded its air defenses with a view to this year's winter.
According to Ukrainian reports, one person was killed and four other civilians were injured in Russian attacks in eastern Ukraine on Saturday. One civilian was killed during the shelling of the city of Chassiv Yar in the Donetsk region, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry announced on the online service Telegram. Among the injured were a man and his daughter, who had wanted to visit relatives in the border town of Semenivka.
Meanwhile, the governor of the Russian border region of Belgorod accused Ukraine of attacking several villages on Sunday. The towns had come under fire from drones and artillery, explained Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov. However, no people were injured and no major material damage was caused.
