Ukraine coach ahead of Italy game: "Have a good chance"
Ukrainian national team coach Serhij Rebrow is also pinning his hopes on the crowd in Leverkusen ahead of the decisive European Championship qualifier against Italy. "There's a difference between facing Italy in a packed San Siro Stadium and here in Germany. Many Ukrainians live here. But we also received enormous support from the German soccer fans at our recent game in Bremen. I'm sure they'll be cheering us on again," said Rebrow on Sunday.
Ukraine can secure a direct ticket to Euro 2024 in Germany on Monday (20:45/Nitro and DAZN) with a win against Italy at the alternative venue in Leverkusen. "I think we have a good chance," said Rebrow. The BayArena will be played in front of full stands.
Because Ukraine is still not playing any home games in its own country due to the Russian war of aggression, the clash with the European champions will take place in North Rhine-Westphalia. In qualifying for Euro 2024 in Germany, Ukraine is in third place in Group C behind England and tied on points with Italy. With a win, Ukraine would qualify for the final tournament in the midst of the war situation in their own country. Italy will only need a draw.
"The chance is great. I don't need to motivate anyone in the team," said Rebrow, who wants to provide some distraction and joy with his team, at least for a short time. "For me, soccer is about emotions, which our country and our people are currently lacking. We have to show our character on the pitch. That's why we also want to play for the people and our soldiers - and for peace," said the 49-year-old.
Despite the ongoing conflicts and the Russian war, Ukraine's European Championship qualification hangs in the balance against Italy. Rebrow believes soccer can provide a moment of joy and distraction, stating, "We want to play for the people and our soldiers - and for peace." With a win, Ukrainian fans in Germany could celebrate Soccer triumphing over War.
