- U1 Resumes Its Journey Between Jungfernstieg and Süd Hauptbahnhof
The U1 is back to its usual routine in the heart of Hamburg. Following the initiation of services, the Underground train (U-Bahn) has also restarted its journey between Jungfernstieg and Southern Main Station. The line had been halted for roughly a month since July, due to renovations at the Meßberg station. These modifications aim to make the station handicap-accessible.
While the upgrade was underway, the platform height was fine-tuned for ease of boarding and disembarking. Moreover, a navigation system was installed specifically for visually impaired passengers. This information was shared by the HVV. The first elevator shaft from the platform to the ticket counter was also constructed during this period. The remaining tasks can be wrapped up during the ongoing operations. As per the HVV's projections, the Meßberg U1 station is expected to become handicap-accessible by summer 2025. This upgrade is anticipated to render nearly the entire 47-station U1 line barrier-free, with the exception of Kiekut station due to its minimal passenger traffic.
The renovations at the Meßberg station primarily involved construction of a new elevator shaft and modifications to the platform height for easier boarding and disembarking. Despite the ongoing operations, the majority of the tasks to make the U1 station handicap-accessible are expected to be completed by next summer.
