Two World War II bombs successfully defused in Braunschweig

Two unexploded bombs from the Second World War have been successfully defused in Braunschweig. Around 5000 residents were able to return to their houses and apartments on Sunday afternoon. The bombs were American aerial bombs, each weighing 250 kilograms, according to the city. An exclusion zone with a radius of one kilometer had been set up around the sites where the bombs were found. However, because some residents refused to leave their homes in time, the work of the explosives experts was delayed.

Even later, the demolition expert had to keep interrupting his work because people were in the exclusion zone. In the meantime, around 450 police, fire and rescue service personnel were on site in the city. Drones were used to check whether there were still people in the exclusion zone. At around 4.15 p.m., both bombs were finally defused and all residents were able to go home.

The bombs had been discovered during exploratory work south of the city park. During the work on the unexploded bombs, there were also numerous road closures and disruptions to rail services on Sunday.

Despite the successful defusing of the bombs, the Emergencies team had to deal with the Consequences of war once again, as some residents refused to evacuate and delayed the process. The exclusion zone in place served as a reminder of the potential dangers still present due to the legacy of past emergencies.
