Award - Two scientists from NRW receive Leibniz Prizes

A scientist from North Rhine-Westphalia has been awarded the highly endowed Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize. Mathematician Eva Viehmann (University of Münster) and cryptography professor Eike Kiltz (University of Bochum) will each receive prize money of 2.5 million euros, which they can use for their research over the next seven years, as announced by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in Bonn on Thursday. A total of ten scientists will be honored.

The "outstanding mathematician" Viehmann will receive the prize for her work on arithmetic algebraic geometry as part of the Langland program, the DFG said. The program is one of the most fascinating in theoretical mathematics, dealing with seemingly mysterious connections between prime numbers, for example. Viehmann is making considerable progress in this field of research, it said.

Kiltz was honored for his work on encryption technology. According to the DFG, his pioneering work has shaped the field of public key cryptography. This allows information to be securely encrypted and communicated via public channels. Scientists are therefore looking for better encryption methods because the further development of quantum computers increases the risk of them cracking the encryption.

The Leibniz Prize, which has been awarded annually by the DFG since 1986, is considered the most important research funding prize in Germany. It will be awarded on March 13, 2024 in Berlin.

The University of Münster, located in North Rhine-Westphalia, is the institution where the Leibniz Prize-winning mathematician, Eva Viehmann, conducts her research. The westphalian wilhelms university in Bonn, on the other hand, is where the German Research Foundation (DFG) announced the awards. Ruhr University Bochum, also from North Rhine-Westphalia, is the place where Eike Kiltz, the cryptography professor who received the Leibniz Prize, works. The German research community celebrated the achievements of these two scientists from NRW in the field of Mathematics and Cryptography. The Leibniz Prize, a significant award in the German scientific community, has also recognized the groundbreaking work done by scientists from other universities in cities like Munster and Bochum.
