Crime - Two police officers on trial for assault in the line of duty
From this Monday (9.00 a.m.), two police officers will have to answer to the district court in Aurich, East Frisia, for a total of five cases of alleged police violence. The public prosecutor's office is accusing the two 26 and 32-year-old defendants, who hold the rank of police commissioner, of assault in office. The cases are alleged to have occurred during police operations in Emden in 2021 - according to the public prosecutor's office, both officers from the Emden police station were on duty during one of the operations.
During this operation in May 2021, the police officers were alerted to an initially missing man, according to the indictment. When this man was found by the officers in Emden city center, the now 32-year-old police officer is said to have physically assaulted the man "massively" and "without reason", according to a spokesman for the Aurich public prosecutor's office. The man is also said to have been injured by the 26-year-old police officer at the police station.
According to the prosecution, the man was so badly injured that he had to be treated in hospital for twelve days. The court wants to hear several witnesses. Six trial days have been scheduled.
