Two roommates killed in refugee home: Man committed to psychiatric ward
Two of the deceased were two men, one aged 29 and the other 42. They were found lifeless in the morning. The suspect was previously reported to have been arrested on the same day and later, due to a court order, was temporarily in a psychiatric hospital. He was diagnosed with delusions and was deemed not guilty.
According to court records from Tuesday, this diagnosis was confirmed during the proceedings that began in May. The responsible chamber ordered a permanent placement of the man in a psychiatric institution due to danger to the public. The decision was made on the Monday of the previous week.
The crime had occurred at night in a refugee accommodation in the Winterhude district, and the suspect was charged with double murder. In a protective custody proceeding, it is being determined if a presumably non-responsible offender is to be committed to a psychiatric hospital. This is not a regular criminal trial.
- The refugee home in Winterhude, where the double murder occurred, housed the two victims and the suspect as roommates.
- The regional court, in a hearing that took place in May, confirmed the suspect's diagnosis of delusions and ordered his permanent placement in a psychiatric institution due to potential danger to the public.
- Despite the court's decision, the suspect, who is a man in his 40s, was previously found in a Hanseatic city, allegedly being held in a psychiatric hospital.
- The assassination of the two men, one in his late twenties, has led to an ongoing protective custody proceeding, determining if the suspect, due to his suspected non-responsibility, should be committed to a psychiatric hospital.
- The city of Hamburg is now grappling with the aftermath of the tragedy, seeking justice for the two slain men while also contending with the complicated psychiatric situation of the suspect.
