Two dead in accident on A31: car torn apart
Two people were killed and two others injured in a serious accident on the A31 near Lingen on Friday evening. A driver and his passenger had been driving on the highway between Lingen and Emsbüren. There, a collision occurred with two other cars for as yet unexplained reasons, according to the police. The car involved in the accident was torn in two. According to a fire department spokesperson, the two occupants were thrown out of the car. One person was killed instantly and resuscitation attempts were made on the other victim, but were ultimately in vain.
According to the police, the female driver and the driver of the other two cars involved sustained minor injuries. The road and the grass verge were littered with debris over a long stretch. The highway in the direction of Bottrop was still fully closed early Saturday morning, more than five hours after the accident. The police did not initially provide any further details about the accident. At the time of the accident, temperatures were around freezing point and it was wet. However, it was initially unclear whether the weather conditions played a role in the accident.
The accident on the A31 resulted in significant traffic disruptions, with the highway in the direction of Bottrop remaining closed for several hours.
