Twitter alternative from Facebook parent Meta: Threads launches in the EU

Threads is based on the Instagram meta service. Users can create a profile that is linked to their Instagram account. Without their own Threads profile, they can read, share and even report content, but not publish it themselves.

According to the company, the reason for the delayed launch is regulatory requirements in the EU. Among other things, the EU laws on digital services (DSA) and digital markets (DMA) mean that large internet companies such as Meta are subject to stricter regulations.

Among other things, platforms such as the new Threads service must disclose information about personalized advertising and their algorithms. Users must also be able to view posts in online services in chronological order without an algorithm.
