Voting Process - Twenty individuals from NRW are deployed to the European Parliament.
North Rhine-Westphalia will have 20 representatives in the European Parliament out of the 96 Germans, based on the preliminary results of the 2024 elections. The CDU emerged as the party with the most mandates, as disclosed by the state election commissioner on a Monday morning. Much like the previous terms, the CDU from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, led by Peter Liese, received six seats.
In comparison, the SPD is now sending only 2 representatives (previously, 4), while the Greens have won only three seats (previously, 4). Notably, the German Green Party candidate Terry Reintke, who also serves as the chair of their faction in the European Parliament, becomes one of the chosen representatives from North Rhine-Westphalia. The AfD still holds two seats, while the FDP is sending two representatives as well, including a German FDP candidate and prominent defense politician, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann.
Joining this list is the former Düsseldorf mayor Thomas Geisel, presently representing the new alliance of Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW). Additionally, The Left, the Animal Welfare Party, the Family Party, and the PdF also have one seat each filled by a candidate originating from North Rhine-Westphalia. A total of 720 seats comprise the newly elected European Parliament with no threshold for the election.
The CDU maintained its strength both nationwide and in North Rhine-Westphalia, garnering 31.2% of the votes according to preliminary results. The SPD came in second place with 17.2%, which is a decrease of two percentage points contrasting 2019's results. The Greens saw a significant slump, reaching 13.5%, while AfD made a gain of about four percentage points and stood at 12.6%. The FDP held a relatively stable position with 6.3%, and the new alliance of Sahra Wagenknecht managed to obtain 4.4% in North Rhine-Westphalia.
