Last weekend in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the German Federal Police arrested numerous undocumented immigrants. On the night of Saturday, three Algerian men, aged 19 to 29, were pulled over on a bike path between Plön and Bismarck (Vorpommern-Greifswald district). None of them had a valid German passport or residence permit. Following their interrogation, they were sent back to Poland.

On Sunday morning, four Moroccans aged 23 to 26, along with a 30-year-old Iraqi, were found in the Grambow district of Schwennenz by federal police. The North Africans were scheduled for return to Poland the following day, while the Iraqi was taken to the initial reception facility in Stern-Buchholz. Shortly after, two Sri Lankans (22 and 29 years old) and two Afghans (23 and 33 years old) were stopped on the B104 in Plön without proper documentation. They were assigned to the initial reception facilities in Stern-Buchholz and Nostorf.

Illegal border crossing via the infamous 'Belarus route'

Poland and the European Union have levied blame against Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Belarusian ally, Alexander Lukashenko, for willfully facilitating illegal border crossings into the EU since 2021. This route begins in Belarus, leading to the EU's border with Poland.

In the first half of the year, approximately 3,100 illegal entries through the 'Belarus route' were recorded nationwide. This figure represents the majority of the immigrants apprehended in MV. According to the German Federal Police's statistics, a total of 11,932 individuals entered Germany via this route in all of 2023.

The ongoing issue of illegal migration through the 'Belarus route' has seen Poland and the EU accuse Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko of facilitating these crossings since 2021. Despite efforts to stop this migration, numerous undocumented immigrants continue to enter Germany, with over 11,932 recorded in 2023 alone.
