Twelve million viewers watch "Wetten, dass...?" on ZDF
An audience of millions tuned in to watch Thomas Gottschalk's farewell as presenter of the ZDF classic "Wetten, dass...?": 12.13 million people tuned in on Saturday evening, as the broadcaster announced on its website on Sunday. This corresponds to a market share of 45.3 percent.
At the end of the entertainment show, which lasted several hours, Gottschalk said his final farewell as presenter in Offenburg. He had previously announced his retirement. The first revival show from Nuremberg attracted 13.8 million viewers in 2021. The second edition from Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance attracted around 10.1 million.
"Wetten, dass...?" has become a symbol of German television entertainment since its launch on February 14, 1981. Inventor Frank Elstner hosted the first 39 episodes. His successor Gottschalk arrived in September 1987 and left his mark on the show. Almost 21 million people watched his first show.
Despite the odds, the ratings for the revival shows didn't surpass the initial record-breaking viewership when Gottschalk first took over as host. Moreover, media outlets widely discussed the viewing figures of "Wetten, dass...?" on television.
