Soccer - TV expert Schult backs Neuer as Germany's European Championship goalkeeper
TV pundit Almuth Schult has a clear opinion on who should be in goal for the German national soccer team at next year's European Championships. "My money is on Manuel Neuer," said the 32-year-old on Saturday during a media event in Hamburg on the occasion of the group draw, which is to take place in the Elbphilharmonie in the evening.
Schult hopes that both Bayern keeper Neuer and Marc-André ter Stegen from FC Barcelona will be in top form for the European Championship. "The good thing is that we have no problems at all in this position," said the former national goalkeeper and Olympic champion. Kevin Trapp (Eintracht Frankfurt), Oliver Baumann (TSG 1899 Hoffenheim) and Bernd Leno (FC Fulham) are also strong goalkeepers.
Ex-national goalkeeper René Adler, who was also present in Hamburg, said of ter Stegen: "His performances in Barcelona are world class." Adler, on the other hand, described the 31-year-old's performances in the national jersey as good.
Commenting on the state of the national team ahead of the continental tournament, Adler, who played for Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburger SV and Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga, said: "The best thing is that we still have time to develop." The most important task for national coach Julian Nagelsmann in the remaining months until the European Championship is to "form a team from the existing world-class players".
