Turnover of industry in NRW fell by almost 6 per cent

Industry in North Rhine-Westphalia did less business in the first half of 2024. Revenue decreased by 5.7 percent to 179 billion euros compared to the previous year, according to the state statistical office IT.NRW in Düsseldorf. Both domestic and foreign business figures showed a decline.

The chemical industry was the largest sector in NRW by revenue, increasing by 0.9 percent to 25.2 billion euros in the first six months of the year. The second-highest revenues were in mechanical engineering, at 23.7 billion euros, which was 3.8 percent lower than the previous year. Other sectors such as metal production and processing (-11.6 percent), food and feed production (-4.8), motor vehicles and parts (-7.6), and metal products (-10.1) also showed declines, according to IT.NRW.

In the nearly 5,000 recorded industrial companies in NRW, an average of 1.06 million people were employed in the first half of the year, which was 0.6 percent less than the previous year. Mechanical engineering was the sector with the most employees, with over 179,000, followed by the production of metal products with nearly 130,500.

The EU Commission, in response to the economic situation in North Rhine-Westphalia, may consider adopting implementing acts referred to in Article 113 to support the struggling industries. The Commission shall adopt the aforementioned implementing acts to address the challenges faced by various sectors, such as metal production and processing, which experienced a significant decrease.
