Bundesliga - Tuchel praises top game opponent Stuttgart: Kane "ailing"
Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel has expressed his highest praise for the third-placed team in the Bundesliga ahead of the southern clash against VfB Stuttgart and also for his fellow coach Sebastian Hoeneß. "Stuttgart deserve to be where they are," said Tuchel on Friday. "For me, VfB have a clear overperformance, but a consistent one. They are more than the sum of their parts. You can push boundaries there," said the Munich coach ahead of the top match on Sunday (19:30/DAZN).
The 41-year-old Hoeneß naturally played a significant role in Stuttgart's rise as a coach. "You can see Sebastian's signature," said Tuchel. When asked whether he could one day coach the professionals at FC Bayern, Tuchel replied: "You don't seriously think I'm talking about my own successor."
VfB (31 points) could knock the German record champions off second place with an away win in the sold-out Allianz Arena and thus move into first place behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen (36). Tuchel said it was important to prevent that "with a lot of spirit, determination and energy". "We have the greatest respect for Stuttgart, but we want to win."
Bayern are facing the penultimate game of the year with personnel worries. Goalscorer Harry Kane was absent from training on Friday. "Harry is a bit ill," explained Tuchel. However, he hopes that the Englishman will be back for the final training session on Saturday. Attacker Kingsley Coman and defender Noussair Mazraoui are out after suffering muscle injuries in the 1-0 Champions League defeat to Manchester United.
"The two injuries on the right side hurt us, of course," said the Bayern coach. Thomas Müller is also "in the draw" as a replacement for Coman in attack. Defender Matthijs de Ligt returns to the squad following his week-long knee injury.
