Champions League - Tuchel has "fun" again: quarter-finals as next goal
Thomas Tuchel was proud of his team after FC Bayern Munich's win at Manchester United and looked ahead to the knockout phase of the Champions League with a fighting spirit. "It was fun," said the coach on Prime Video after the German soccer champions' 1-0 win on Tuesday evening to conclude the group stage of the Champions League at Old Trafford.
The 50-year-old was pleased with the reaction to the heavy 5-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga. "That was at the highest level from a team point of view. It was our best game in the group stage," commented Tuchel. He praised energy and concentration.
"Now we've done our duty," said the Munich coach about the very commanding group stage with five wins and one draw. In the round of 16 draw next Monday, FC Bayern will be in the pot of the group winners. It will therefore face a group runner-up and play the second leg in its own stadium. "Of course, we definitely want to reach the quarter-finals," said Tuchel. After that, with a bit of luck, anything is possible in the Champions League.
Bayern last won the most important club competition in 2020. Three years ago, they defeated Paris Saint-Germain, then coached by Tuchel, 1-0 in the final tournament in Lisbon. The only goal was scored by Kingsley Coman, who was also Munich's match-winner on Tuesday evening in Manchester.
