Tuchel follows up with criticism of player workload
Coach Thomas Tuchel is particularly concerned about the fitness and health of his top players at FC Bayern Munich in the new year. "It's already going to be a mental strain that's at the limit," said Tuchel after the 1-0 (1-0) win at 1. FC Köln on Friday evening with a view to the European Championship at home in the summer and the Champions League reform. "That could give us an extra two to four games," added the Bayern coach.
The European Championship at home is also "very exhausting. It can be very exhausting". Tuchel therefore demanded: "We have to be very clever in our squad planning."
Even before the game in Cologne, he had complained about the excessive workload of top international players. "It's at the absolute limit in the calendar, if not over it," said the 50-year-old, who also criticized the scheduling of the Bayern game in Cologne on Friday.
Tuchel has had a number of international players unavailable in recent days due to their international assignments. Some had only arrived back in Munich on Thursday. "We didn't look tired today, but the issue remains the same," said the Bayern coach, who refrained from making any substitutions in the match against Cologne.
Despite Tuchel's concerns about player workload, 1st FC Cologne posed a challenging match for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. The tiredness from international duties was apparent, but Bayern managed to secure a 1-0 victory.
In the upcoming Bundesliga fixtures, Bayern Munich will face stern competition, including a clash against 1st FC Cologne and potential title contenders like 1st FC Cologne's rival, Bayern Munich's dominance in the Bundesliga might be tested by the intense workload of their star players.
