Semiconductor factory - TSMC's location in Dresden - the surrounding area seeks to seize opportunities
To tackle the challenges posed by the settlement of Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC in Dresden, surrounding cities and municipalities are developing a study. This involves exploring residential and commercial land potential and intensifying regional cooperation between Dresden and its surroundings, as announced by the district of Saxon Switzerland-Osterzgebirge on Tuesday.
Regional Development Potential
A temporary working group "Dresden Region" will oversee the investigations and preparations for institutionalization. This group includes the districts of Bautzen, Meißen, and Saxon Switzerland-Osterzgebirge, as well as 21 cities and municipalities in these districts. According to the announcement, Saxon Switzerland-Osterzgebirge will contribute 10,000 euros.
"Thanks to its proximity to the state capital, our district has the opportunity to also benefit from positive effects," said Landrat Michael Geisler (CDU). "The settlement of suppliers could give existing industrial areas an advantage and serve as a catalyst for infrastructure development in municipalities outside the settlement area."
2000 Jobs to be Created by TSMC Settlement
TSMC announced about a year ago that it would build a semiconductor factory in Dresden by 2027. It will be a joint venture with Bosch, Infineon, and NXP Semiconductor under the name European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (ESMC) in the Airportpark industrial area, where Bosch already produces microchips. The project is expected to create 2000 new jobs.
With the network "Silicon Saxony," the Free State is already Europe's largest microelectronics site, with one in three EU-produced chips coming from Saxony. Around 3650 companies, including Infineon and Globalfoundries, are active in the region. By 2030, the TSMC settlement is expected to create an additional 20,000 new jobs, among other things.
The cooperation between Dresden and its surrounding areas, initiated by the district of Saxon Switzerland-Osterzgebirge, aims to capitalize on TSMC's presence, potentially benefiting neighboring industrial areas.
The joint venture between TSMC and other companies, such as Bosch and Infineon, in Dresden's Airportpark industrial area has been backed by TSMC's announcement of creating 2000 new jobs.
