Tschentscher advocates debate on refugee policy

Hamburg's mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) is in favor of an open debate on asylum and migration. "It is important that we don't avoid it," said Tschentscher in a speech at the Hamburg SPD state party conference in the Bürgerhaus Wilhelmsburg on Saturday. The Left and the Greens were largely avoiding the debate. The state party conference had begun on Friday evening.

There are currently around 50,000 people in public accommodation in Hamburg, said Tschentscher. If you wanted to take in, accommodate and integrate refugees as before, you would reach your limits, said Tschentscher. Additional accommodation would have to be built in city districts.

Regarding the Gaza war, Tschentscher said that the actions of Hamas should not be indirectly legitimized. This was a terrible attitude that should not be taken in. "Against the background of our history, we have a special responsibility to protect and promote Jewish life," said the mayor.

In light of the ongoing debate on asylum and migration, several political parties in Hamburg have different stances. While the Left and the Greens have been perceived to avoid the discussion, the SPD, led by mayor Peter Tschentscher, has advocated for an open dialogue. Furthermore, with the current population of around 50,000 refugees in public accommodation, the SPD suggests that building additional accommodation in city districts will be necessary to continue accommodating and integrating refugees, as the city's resources may be approaching their limits.
