Troubles mount for UK's embattled government party amidst electoral gambling controversy

In a shocking turn of events, the UK's PA Media news agency unveiled on Thursday that the Tory candidate, Laura Saunders, is under investigation by the gambling watchdog for supposed betting infractions. According to the BBC, the scrutiny revolves around a wager she placed on the exact date of the general election, scheduled for July 4.

Prior to venturing into politics, Saunders was a member of the Conservative Party.UK media outlets also shed light on her marriage to Tony Lee, the Tory Party’s director of campaigning. Lee has opted to take a temporary break from his post, with mere days left till the elections, as per the BBC.

Saunders has chosen to stay mum on the matter. A Tory representative told CNN, "We received a notification from the Gambling Commission regarding a handful of individuals. Given the Gambling Commission is an autonomous entity, it wouldn’t be apt to comment further, until any proceedings are concluded.”

Saunders isn't the only Tory candidate under the Gambling Commission's microscope.

Craig Williams, an aide to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in parliament, is rumored to have wagered £100 ($127) on the election taking place in July, just three days before Sunak made the announcement official.

Last week, Williams spoke to the BBC, stating, “I undeniably made a huge blunder in judgement, and I apologize... I won’t delve deeper into my statement because it’s an autonomous process... The Gambling Commission is examining it now.”

The situation took a tumble for Sunak on Wednesday, when it was disclosed that a cop on his security detail was also under investigation.

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement, "The matter was immediately forwarded to officers in the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards, who initiated an investigation, and the officer was also removed from active duty."

The opposition Labour Party has criticized the scandal as another instance of the Tory Party's culture of cronyism, referring to the manner in which lucrative government contracts were allocated to individuals affiliated with the Tory Party during the Covid-19 pandemic.

"It reeks. And the public will form their own opinions. It’s not a good look," a Labour representative told CNN.

Since November 2021, Sunak and the Tories have been trailing behind Labour in the polls. As things stand, the Tories are predicted to endure a huge loss on July 4. This would mark the first time Labour has assumed power from opposition since 1997 and would conclude 14 years of contentious rule by the Tory Party.

The final results will not be disclosed until July 5. If Sunak loses the election, he will vacate his position the same day.
