Processes - Trio of perpetrators allegedly stole cash cards from senior citizens

Two women and a man allegedly targeted elderly people in Dresden over a period of months while they were withdrawing money and then robbed or stole from them. According to the indictment, they then used the stolen cards to withdraw money dozens of times in Dresden and also in Poland and paid for purchases with the debit cards. Since Friday, the trio has been on trial at Dresden District Court for nine counts of gang robbery, numerous other thefts and computer fraud. They are accused of 168 crimes with a total loss of around 60,000 euros.

The defendants lived in Dresden and are said to have several previous convictions in Germany and abroad. The public prosecutor's office assumes that the gang also includes other accomplices. On March 1, 2023, the police caught the trio in the act in Dresden. The 52-year-old main defendant confessed on Friday after the chamber had given him the prospect of a prison sentence of around five years. His client had come up with the "business model" and had been on the road with others, explained defense lawyer Ulf Israel. It was important to the 52-year-old that no violence was used against the victims.

The 47-year-old defendant also made a confession and asked to be excused. She is facing around four years in prison. The third defendant (48) refused to enter a plea and claimed that she was not present or was "only physically" present. She had nothing to do with the crimes and had only received 400 euros once. However, when questioned by the presiding judge, she admitted that the razor blades seized from her had also been used to cut open the victims' pockets.

The trial will continue next year. Nine trial days are planned until the beginning of March. The court hopes that the confessions will spare the elderly victims - many of whom were over 80 years old - from having to give evidence in the courtroom.
