Processes - Trial suspended: Accused LKA official did not appear
A trial against an officer of the Berlin State Criminal Police Office(LKA) on suspicion of breach of trust and embezzlement had to be suspended on Tuesday. The former head of the police department did not appear for the hearing at the Tiergarten district court. According to the presiding judge, it will now be examined whether the 61-year-old, who had submitted a medical certificate, was excused from attending. A new trial date has not yet been set.
The civil servant, who has since been suspended, is said to have diverted around 73,000 euros to himself. According to the public prosecutor's office, the man was responsible for the provision of logistics for undercover operations by the Berlin police. He exploited this position to divert money to himself. The prosecution cites the officer's financial difficulties "due to a tendency to gamble" as a possible motive.
16 alleged acts between September 2017 and August 2021 have been charged. In 15 cases, sums of money were involved; in one case, the accused embezzled a scooter. Internal police control measures ultimately led to the discovery of the crimes.
