Public prosecutor's office - Trial over death of girl in children's home begins in February

The case caused horror far beyond the region: A ten-year-old girl was found dead in a children's home in Wunsiedel, Upper Franconia, in April of this year. The investigation revealed that she had been abused and then killed. A 25-year-old man will now stand trial in Hof district court from February 1, 2024 for rape and aggravated sexual abuse of children, among other things, a spokesperson announced on Thursday. Nine dates are scheduled for the trial until the beginning of March 2024.

An eleven-year-old who is allegedly responsible for the girl's death will not be prosecuted due to his age. The boy is said to have strangled the girl during an argument on the same night. He has been summoned as a witness.

The public prosecutor's office accuses the accused of first breaking into the children's home on the night of April 4 to steal valuables. In doing so, he came across the eleven-year-old and masturbated in front of her. The man is said to have later raped the ten-year-old girl and then left the children's home again.

The indictment also accuses the German of five burglaries between May 2022 and April 2023. Among other things, he is alleged to have stolen construction machinery worth around 16,000 euros. In one case, he also set a fire to cover his tracks. The accused has been in custody since the end of April. According to earlier statements by the public prosecutor's office, he has "largely confessed" to the crimes he is accused of.

According to the spokesperson, 39 witnesses, including a forensic pathologist and a forensic psychiatry expert, have been summoned for the trial before a youth chamber of the regional court.

A 40-strong special police commission was entrusted with the investigation. The eleven-year-old boy and the 25-year-old were ultimately targeted. The police and public prosecutor's office announced at the time of the indictment in September that the accused could not be proven to have been involved in the killing of the ten-year-old girl. The investigations had confirmed the suspicion that the eleven-year-old boy had killed the girl. The accused is said to have already left the children's home at this point.
