Unlawful act - Trial of Boateng pauses soon after commencement.
In a Munich courtroom, the long-running trial of ex-football player Jerome Boateng took an unexpected turn. The presiding judge, Susanne Hemmerich, pleaded with both the prosecution and Boateng's defense to discuss a solution outside of court. "After 40 years in this profession, I've never faced such intense media bias towards a defendant," she remarked.
The trial has lasted over six years, with delays attributed to both COVID-19 and administrative oversights. During this time, Boateng's two 13-year-old daughters, who accused him of violence, have been exposed to numerous news articles recounting their parents' ongoing legal battle. Judge Hemmerich implored, "It's time to put this case to rest, especially for the sake of the children." She also suggested, "I think I have a proposal that everyone can agree on."
This is the fourth court dealing with accusations of violence against Boateng during a 2018 Caribbean trip. Since then, the former Bayern Munich player, now signed with Linzer ASK in Austria from the Italian club US Salernitana, has faced various legal proceedings. In 2019, an indictment was filed, and in 2021, he paid a fine of 60 installments of 30,000 Euro each, amounting to $1.8 million.
In October 2022, the Munich I Regional Court sentenced Boateng for battery and slander to a fine of 120 installments of 10,000 Euro each, totaling 1.2 million Euro. However, the decision was overturned by the Bavarian Higher Regional Court. Until a final, legally-binding verdict is issued, Boateng maintains his presumption of innocence.
