Tiergarten District Court - Trial for Zverev: Defense refutes allegations

In the court case concerning German tennis player Alexander Zverev being accused of physical assault against his former girlfriend, his legal representative has dismissed the claims as fictitious. The allegations were lodged roughly 18 months after the alleged event in May 2020 and are connected to a disagreement over custody and support payments for their shared child, as lawyer Alfred Dierlamm pointed out at the Berlin-Tiergarten District Court recently. According to his argument, she wanted to enforce her desires.

The lawyer mentioned that photos, videos, and witness statements from after the supposed assault by Zverev on her with a brief chokehold would demonstrate that there were no visible injuries and that the couple enjoyed themselves eating together with her mother in Hamburg. "There were no indications of dissent and combat, and this was two days after the alleged incident."

The indictment, which is predicated on the assertions of former partner Brenda Patea, alleges that Zverev shoved her against the wall in the hallway of their leased Airbnb apartment in Berlin during a dispute in May 2020. She subsequently experienced shortness of breath and intense pain, claimed the prosecutor. The pain and difficulty swallowing continued for a few days. A so-called sanction order was issued against Zverev without a trial, which mandated a fine of 450,000 euros (90 daily fines of 5,000 euros) for bodily harm. As a result, he lodged an appeal. Consequently, a trial before the District Court is now taking place.

Zverev did not physically attend the hearing. He is currently competing in the French Open in Paris, the second Grand Slam tournament of the year, where he won his second match on Thursday. The previous girlfriend Patea, a past participant in the TV show "Germany's Next Topmodel" in 2017, is taking part in the trial as a codefendant. So far, ten trial days have been set up.

Zverev's counsel asserts that the main issue is Patea's desire to amplify her social media following on Instagram and TikTok and to lead a glamorous life characterized by expensive dining, popular parties, and unlimited shopping. She had frequently deceived in her online content about her life and finances.

Zverev had subsidized her travel, accommodation, luxury purchases, and the apartment in Berlin. They would show his credit card statements in court. Patea only came to understand that a tennis player's life in actuality differs significantly from the lifestyle she had longed for: with rigorous self-control, lengthy training, controlled eating, and without parties and alcohol.
