Office of the Attorney General - Trial for arson attack in Bochum: verdict expected
The verdict is to be announced this Tuesday (9.40 a.m.) in the trial for the arson attack on a school in Bochum, which is said to have been aimed at the synagogue. The 36-year-old defendant is accused of conspiracy to commit aggravated arson and attempted arson.
He is said to have accepted the order for the arson attack from a man who is wanted for murder and attempted murder and is said to have fled to Iran. Because the security precautions at the synagogue were too tight for him, he is said to have thrown the Molotov cocktail at a neighboring school.
The federal prosecutor's office suspects that state authorities in Iran may be behind the crime. They have requested two years and nine months in prison for the accused. The defense, on the other hand, is demanding a suspended sentence of six months for damage to property.
The defendant had confessed to throwing the Molotov cocktail at the school, but denied that the attack was actually intended to target the synagogue.

The trial in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, has uncovered links to extremist elements, as the defendant admitted allegiances to an extremist group. The ongoing criminality processes are shaping up to be a significant challenge for law enforcement.
Despite Iran's denial, Germany's suspicion of state authorities' involvement in this case of arson attack and conspiracy highlights the need for international cooperation in addressing extremist-driven criminality.
