Trial commences for American journalist Gershkovich on June 26 in Russia.
A journalist from The Wall Street Journal was taken into custody in Russia, back in March 2023, and has been locked up at the Lefortovo Prison in Moscow ever since. The accusations against the 32-year-old include working for the CIA and stealing confidential data about the tank manufacturer Uralvagonzavod, located in Sverdlovsk region. If convicted, Gershkovich could be looking at a stretch of up to 20 years behind bars.
This makes him the first Western journalist since the Cold War's end to be nabbed by Russia on espionage charges. Gershkovich, his employer, and the U.S. administration all reject these allegations.
