Crime - Trial begins over hand grenade thrown at mourners
From Thursday (9.15 a.m.), a 23-year-old man will have to answer to the Stuttgart Regional Court for throwing a hand grenade at a mourning congregation in Altbach near Stuttgart. The public prosecutor's office is accusing the young man of attempted murder, among other things. According to the public prosecutor's office, the Iranian is alleged to have thrown a hand grenade at a group of people at a funeral service at the cemetery in Altbach on June 9. At least 15 mourners were injured in the explosion, some of them seriously.
According to the investigators, the background to the crime is a feud between two rival groups in the Stuttgart area that has been raging for many months. The 23-year-old defendant is said to be close to a group from the Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen and Göppingen area, while some of the mourners belonged to another group from the Esslingen area.
For security reasons, the trial is being held in the strictly secured courtroom of the Higher Regional Court in Stuttgart-Stammheim. Eleven trial days have been scheduled so far. A verdict is not expected before mid-March.
