Trial begins after fatal accident on school trip
A fatal accident on a school trip will be heard by the Verden Regional Court near Bremen from today (1 p.m.). The public prosecutor's office is accusing an employee of a forest education center of negligent homicide by omission. The 35-year-old is alleged to have failed to check a trolley. A boy was run over by the wagon running on rails and died.
According to the investigators, the accident occurred in July 2019 during a school trip by a fifth-grade class from Wolfsburg. After an outdoor breakfast break, some of the children were romping around on the wagon on the grounds of the forest education center in the Diepholz district. The 400-kilogram wagon started to move - and ran over the boy. All help came too late for the ten-year-old. A verdict could be reached on December 15.
The investigation into the negligent homicide case has highlighted the importance of implementing safety processes in schools during field trips. Despite the implementation of safety protocols in schools, this tragic incident serves as a reminder of the need for constant vigilance and supervision by adults in charge.
