Trial against drunk truck driver after fatal accident

After a fatal collision between an articulated lorry and a tractor, the truck driver who was drunk at the time according to the indictment will have to answer to the Augsburg District Court on Monday (1.00 pm). According to the investigation, the trucker was driving in northern Swabia last June with more than 2.2 per mille. The man, who was therefore unfit to drive, is said to have driven his heavy truck at excessive speed into oncoming traffic near Bissingen (district of Dillingen an der Donau). There, the articulated truck collided with a tractor driven by a 22-year-old woman. The young woman had no chance of survival.

The truck driver also did not have a driving license at the time. The Cloppenburg district court in Lower Saxony had already revoked the man's license in September 2022 and imposed a ban of just under one year. After the accident, an arrest warrant was issued for the then 57-year-old man, who is still in custody. He has to answer in court for involuntary manslaughter, negligent endangerment of road traffic and driving without a license.

The investigation into the traffic accident in Swabia revealed that the truck driver's drunken state and lack of a valid driver's license contributed to the processes leading to his court appearance. Despite serving a driving ban in Cloppenburg due to prior offenses, the man continued to engage in traffic-related activities, endangering others and ultimately resulting in a tragic outcome.
