Transport Minister relinquishes office: Woidke acknowledges expertise
Following the announcement by Brandenburg's Transport and Construction Minister Guido Beermann (CDU) that he would be stepping down, Minister President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) has paid tribute to his work in the governing coalition. "I have always held Guido Beermann in high esteem as a reliable, fair and friendly partner with great expertise," Woidke told dpa in Potsdam on Saturday. "He has been committed to infrastructure, mobility, housing and construction in Brandenburg for over four years in a calm but assertive manner."
The 57-year-old Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Planning wants to step down from his post just under a year before the state parliamentary elections and is seeking a new professional challenge. The state party surprisingly announced his resignation in a press release on Friday evening. His successor will be 55-year-old State Secretary Rainer Genilke. A new state parliament will be elected in Brandenburg in September 2024.
"The decision to resign is by no means an easy one for me," Beermann wrote in a statement on Friday evening. "I have made this decision after careful consideration. After around 30 years in administration and government in various positions, I am looking to move on to a new stage in my life." He said he wanted to give himself and his family "some private time out in challenging times and strive for a new professional challenge".
In light of Guido Beermann's decision to step down, discussions about potential replacements within the government parties are underway. The incoming Minister is expected to work closely with existing political parties to maintain cooperation and continuity in infrastructure and construction matters.
